The 1996 Untouchable Cats in town to support Daniel Pitino Shelter
The Daniel Pitino Shelter for homeless families is hosting a night with “The Untouchables” Thursday, June 14th, to help raise money for families living at the Shelter, and to give local University of Kentucky Fans a chance to meet and talk with members of the famed 1996 NCAA Championship Team.
The Shelter will also honor the memory of Ben Hartz and Rick Kamuf that evening. Hartz, a founding board member of the Shelter, served for over 17 years. As a local contractor, Hartz handled all of the construction needs and continued to support the Shelter after his time on the board. Kamuf, a well known local farmer, was involved in local and national farming issues, and was a significant supporter of the Shelter.
Tony Delk, Walter McCarty and Jeff Sheppard will be on hand to talk about a team that at the time was considered the greatest UK basketball team ever assembled. In addition to the championship, the team eventually produced nine future NBA basketball players. Delk and McCarty played for 10 years for various NBA teams and Sheppard played a stint with the Atlanta Hawks. McCarty was recently hired as the head coach of the University of Evansville basketball team.
The Big Blue Nation enjoyed a 35-2 record that season, losing early in the year by 10 to a John Calipari coached University of Massachusetts squad that they avenged in the final round of the NCAA tournament on their way to beating Syracuse 76-67 in the championship game.
Tickets for the event are $100 each and table sponsorships are $1,000 (bronze), $2,500 (silver) and $5,000 (gold). Gold and Silver table sponsors will have opportunities for some private conversation with the players along with an autograph session that will include basketballs and bottles of Tony Delk’s wine!
The Daniel Pitino Shelter is currently serving 65 residents who need housing. Their kitchen is also open 365 days a year and serves over 100,000 meals per year. Call Thad Gunderson at 270-688-9000 for more information.
